Sync Troubleshooting

Common synchronization issues and how to fix them quickly.

Quick Fixes

Try these first:

1. Click "Sync Now"
Force immediate sync

2. Restart Xermius
Fresh start

3. Check internet
ping sync.xermius.com

4. Check account
Settings → Account

5. Re-enable sync
Disable → Wait → Enable

One usually works!

Common Issues

Sync Not Working

Symptoms:

- No sync activity
- Status: Disconnected
- Last sync: Hours/days ago
- Changes not appearing

Diagnose:

1. Check sync status:
Click sync icon
Status: ?

2. Check internet:
Open browser
Load website

3. Check account:
Settings → Account
Signed in?

4. Check sync enabled:
Settings → Sync
Enabled?

Fix:

Step 1: Verify connection
□ Internet working?
□ Firewall not blocking?
□ VPN issues?

Step 2: Check account
□ Signed in?
□ Subscription active?
□ Email verified?

Step 3: Re-enable
Settings → Sync
[Disable Sync]
Wait 10 seconds
[Enable Sync]

Step 4: Force sync
[Sync Now]

Should work now!

Sync Stuck "Syncing..."

Symptoms:

- Status: Yellow ○ forever
- "Syncing..." for minutes
- Progress bar frozen
- No completion

Fix:

Method 1: Pause/Resume
1. Click sync icon
2. [Pause Sync]
3. Wait 10 seconds
4. [Resume Sync]

Method 2: Restart
1. Quit Xermius
2. Wait 10 seconds
3. Launch Xermius
4. Auto-syncs on startup

Method 3: Clear cache
Settings → Sync → Advanced
[Clear Sync Cache]
[Sync Now]

Conflicts Every Sync

Symptoms:

- Constant conflict notifications
- Same items conflicting
- Multiple devices involved

Causes:

1. Simultaneous editing
Two devices editing same items

2. Clock mismatch
Device clocks not synced

3. Network delays
Slow sync propagation

4. Sync too infrequent
Changes pile up

Fix:

Solution 1: Increase frequency
Settings → Sync
Frequency: Every 1 minute

Solution 2: Device priority
Settings → Sync → Conflicts
Set primary device

Solution 3: Sequential editing
1. Edit on Device A
2. Sync ✓
3. Then edit on Device B

Solution 4: Sync clocks
Check system time on all devices
Ensure accurate time sync

Missing Data

Symptoms:

- Items disappear
- Some hosts missing
- Snippets gone
- Settings reset

Diagnose:

1. Check sync history:
Settings → Sync → History
Any deletions?

2. Check other devices:
Still there?
Deleted accidentally?

3. Check conflicts:
Resolved incorrectly?

Recover:

Method 1: From backup
Settings → Sync
[Restore from Cloud]
Select recent backup
[Restore]

Method 2: From device
If on another device:
1. Export from there
2. Import on this device

Method 3: From history
Settings → Sync → History
Find deletion event
[Undo] if available

Always keep backups!

Sync Too Slow

Symptoms:

- Sync takes minutes
- Progress very slow
- Frequent timeouts

Causes:

1. Large data set
Many hosts/snippets

2. Slow internet
Low bandwidth

3. Server busy
Peak usage times

4. Many devices
Syncing simultaneously

Fix:

Solution 1: Selective sync
Settings → Sync
Uncheck unused items
Sync less = Faster

Solution 2: Better network
- Use WiFi vs mobile
- Close bandwidth apps
- Try different time

Solution 3: Increase timeout
Settings → Sync → Advanced
Timeout: 30s → 60s

Solution 4: Manual sync
Disable auto-sync
Sync manually when needed

Storage Limit Reached

Symptoms:

- Error: Storage full
- Can't sync new items
- Upload fails

Check usage:

Settings → Sync
Storage: 98 MB / 100 MB

Close to limit!

Fix:

Solution 1: Delete old data
Remove unused:
- Old hosts
- Unused snippets
- Test items

Solution 2: Clear history
Settings → Sync
[Clear Old Versions]
Keeps current, removes history

Solution 3: Upgrade plan
Free: 100 MB
Pro: 1 GB
Enterprise: 10 GB

Solution 4: Selective sync
Sync only essentials
Disable unused items

Can't Connect to Server

Symptoms:

- Error: Connection failed
- Can't reach server
- Timeout errors

Diagnose:

Test connection:
$ ping sync.xermius.com
$ curl https://sync.xermius.com

Works? = Xermius issue
Fails? = Network issue

Fix:

Network Issue:
□ Check internet
□ Check firewall
□ Check VPN
□ Check proxy

Firewall:
Allow Xermius:
- Outbound HTTPS (443)
- To sync.xermius.com
- Both TCP and UDP

Proxy:
Settings → Network → Proxy
Configure if needed

Still fails?
Try different network
Contact support

Advanced Issues

Database Corruption

Symptoms:

- Sync crashes
- Data inconsistent
- Strange errors

Fix:

1. Export data:
Hosts → Export All

2. Disable sync:
Settings → Sync
[Disable]

3. Reset database:
Settings → Advanced
[Reset Sync Database]

4. Re-enable sync:
[Enable Sync]

5. Import data:
Hosts → Import

Fresh start!

Multiple Accounts Issue

Symptoms:

- Syncing wrong account
- Mixed data
- Confusion

Fix:

1. Sign out:
Settings → Account
[Sign Out]

2. Clear cache:
Settings → Advanced
[Clear All Cache]

3. Sign in correct account:
[Sign In]
Verify email!

4. Enable sync:
Check what downloads
Confirm correct data

Sync Loop

Symptoms:

- Constant syncing
- Never completes
- Same items repeatedly

Fix:

1. Pause sync:
[Pause]

2. Clear sync queue:
Settings → Sync
[Clear Pending]

3. Force full sync:
[Force Full Sync]

4. Resume:
[Resume]

Breaks the loop

Error Messages

"Authentication Failed"

Meaning: Can't verify account

Fix:

1. Check password
2. Re-sign in
3. Verify email
4. Check subscription

"Network Timeout"

Meaning: Server not responding

Fix:

1. Check internet
2. Retry later
3. Increase timeout
4. Different network

"Conflict Resolution Required"

Meaning: Can't auto-resolve conflict

Fix:

1. Open conflicts
2. Manually resolve
3. Sync again

"Sync Disabled by Server"

Meaning: Account issue

Fix:

1. Check email for notices
2. Verify subscription
3. Contact support
4. May be temporary

"Version Mismatch"

Meaning: App outdated

Fix:

1. Update Xermius
2. Restart app
3. Sync again
